Description
Melanotan-1
Supplied as a lyophilized powder that must be reconstituted with bacteriostatic water prior to research use.
What Is Melanotan 1?
Melanotan 1, also known as Afamelanotide, is a synthetic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It enhances skin pigmentation and provides protection against UV exposure by increasing melanin production. Unlike Melanotan 2, it has minimal effects on libido and is primarily studied for photoprotective benefits.
Skin Pigmentation & Tanning
-Encourages a more even, natural-looking tan with reduced reliance on UV exposure
UV Protection
-Increases melanin levels to help reduce sunburn risk and UV-related skin damage
Skin Disorder Treatment
-FDA- and EMA-approved (as Afamelanotide / Scenesse®) for erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare sunlight sensitivity disorder
Cosmetic Research
-Investigated for reducing sun damage and promoting more uniform skin tone
Mechanism of Action
-Binds to melanocortin-1 receptors (MC1R) in skin cells
-Stimulates melanin synthesis, the pigment responsible for skin and hair coloration
-Provides both cosmetic pigmentation effects and medical photoprotection
Key benefits
✅ Deeper, more uniform skin tone
✅ Reduced susceptibility to sunburn and UV damage
✅ FDA/EMA approval for EPP treatment (Scenesse® implant)
✅ Lower tendency for freckle or mole darkening compared to Melanotan 2
âš Note: Although Melanotan 1 (Afamelanotide) is approved for specific medical indications, its use is for research purpose only. No human consumption.
